When uploading content to a website, your content doesn’t immediately reach the first page of Google Search Engine Results Page (SERP). Instead, your website will go through these 3 phases.

1. Crawling

First, Google will discover what pages exist on the internet. Google continuously explores new pages and adds them to its list of known pages.

When a crawler finds a webpage, the system will render the page content, just like a browser does. It then records important signals, from keywords to site updates, and keeps tracking everything in the search index.

Google’s search index contains hundreds of billions of pages and has a capacity of more than 100,000,000 GB. This is similar to an index at the back of a book, with entries for every word seen on every indexed webpage. When indexing a webpage, entries are added for all words contained on that page.

2. Indexing

After Google recognizes your website pages, it will understand the various elements within them. Therefore, Google Webmaster recommends several things you need to do:

Create short and meaningful page titles. Use page titles that describe the subject of the page. Use text to convey important content points, not images, as Google can understand words better than images or videos.

However, you should also include at least one image for each article to help visitors better understand your content.

Pages are indexed by Google when they have been visited by Google’s crawler (“Googlebot”), analyzed for content and meaning, and stored in Google’s index. Indexed pages can appear in Google Search results (if the pages follow Google’s webmaster guidelines). Although most pages are crawled before indexing, Google can also index pages without access to their content (for example, if pages are blocked by robots.txt)

3. Serving and Ranking

When typing keywords in the Google search bar, you will get information relevant to your criteria, such as location, language, and references that match your search history. The same applies to other users who might become visitors to your website.

Therefore, ensure your website meets the following requirements:

Pages load quickly and are mobile-friendly Fill pages with useful and relevant content Understand tips and tricks for SEO guidelines

When users type a query, Google tries to find the most relevant answers from its index based on many factors. Google attempts to determine the highest quality answers while considering other factors that will provide the best user experience and most accurate answers, taking into account things like user location, language, and device (desktop or mobile). For example, search results for “bicycle repair shop” for users in Paris will differ from results for users in Hong Kong. Google doesn’t accept payments to rank pages higher, and ranking is done programmatically.
